First Aid for a Mosquito Bite

Mosquito bites are among the most annoying things on the planet. They itch, burn, and sting like nothing else out there. And since mosquitoes live almost everywhere, they’re extremely common. A mosquito bite can cause real discomfort, but luckily this can be minimized with quick treatment.

The good news is that mosquito bites very rarely warrant an emergency. The only exception to this is if the bitten person is severely allergic to the bites. However, this is an extremely rare condition and needs to be treated by professional medical experts, not you. You should focus your efforts on learning how to deal with typical bites.

Avoiding Mosquito Bites

This is by far the best way to deal with mosquitoes. If you don’t get a bite, you won;t need to treat it.

  1. Stay indoors or in a screened area when possible
  2. Cover yourself with long sleeved shirts and pants
  3. Apply bug spray, especially on exp[osed areas
  4. Avoid places with lots of standing water, where mosquitoes like to congregate

Treating a mosquito bite

  1. Wash the bite with soap and water to help avoid infection
  2. Try to avoid scratching the area, especially with your nails or other substances that can open the skin. If you must, rub the bite with a towel or similar abrasive substance
  3. If the itching is very bad, try applying an ice pack for a few minutes
  4. There are a variety of over the counter inti itching lotions and creams, and most of them are fairly effective. Apply liberal amounts to your mosquito bite
  5. You can also take a couple of ibuprofen or aspirin to help dull the itchiness and pain

Afterwards

Most mosquito bites are harmless and diminish in a day or two, assuming you don’t scratch it and get it infected. However, you still need to keep an eye on yourself. Though it;s uncommon, many mosquitos do carry dangerous diseases that they can transmit to you in a bite. If you feel any kind of illness after a mosquito bite, seek medical help as quickly as possible.
