How to minimize the effects of Tear gas?

Tear gas is used to disperse crowds and control mass riots. The exposure is not fun but causes lot of pain. The tearing eyes and pain seems like a threat to life but the effects should reduce by 30 minutes. Precautions should be taken to reduce the effects of tear gas as it may have adverse affects on your health. Tear gas is a chemical compound which causes discomfort to the eyes, mucous membrane and skin.

Instructions to reduce the effects of Tear gas:

  • Try to move away from the tear gas attack.
  • The tear gas accumulates in a cloud from the ground.
  • Keep your self as high as possible, by standing up.
  • Never try to pull sweaters or shirts over your head.
  • Clothing that comes in contact with tear gas should be removed.
  • The body and face can be washed with soap and water.
  • Rinse with lots of uncontaminated and clear water.
  • If you have blurred vision or burning sensation, rinse the eyes with clear water.
  • The rinsing should be done for 10 to 15 minutes.
  • Remove the contact lens with washed hands or take help from another person.
  • The person who helps should be told to wash his hands before removing the lens.
  • Never use those lens again and dispose them immediately.
  • Remove and rinse any metallic things like jewelry and glasses.
  • Wash them with soap and water and rinse in clean water before wearing.
  • The contaminated clothing can be discarded or wash them separately before reusing those clothes.
  • When you are helping other people, wear rubber gloves.
  • If you get effected with the gas, be very careful before rendering help.
  • In case of asthma attacks, bronchodilators can be used.

How to prevent the effects of Tear gas:

  • The best defense is a gas mask.
  • If a gas mask is not available soak a paper towel in cider vinegar or lemon juice.
  • Place that in a plastic bag.
  • The acidified cloth can be used to breathe through several times.
  • Safety goggles can be used as this reduces the effects of tear gas.

Symptoms when exposed to tear gas:

  • Blurred vision.
  • Excessive tearing.
  • Excessive salivation.
  • Coughing and breathing difficulty.
  • Confusion and disorientation.
  • Intense anger.
  • Burning sensation of the eyes.


  • The irritation from tear gas disappears after 5-30 minutes.
  • It may take 2 hours also for the symptoms to reduce.
  • If proper treatment is taken on time the symptoms vanish fast.
