First aid for Bed Bug Bites

Immediate Treatment:

  • The bug bite area should be washed with soap and water.
  • Washing can be done 2 or 3 times a day.
  • An ice pack or cold compress can be given for 15- 20 minutes.
  • Keep a thin cloth over the skin before giving cold compress.
  • Ibuprofen can be taken to reduce pain after consulting a doctor.
  • If a large skin rash is noticed and if the pain persists for more number of days, seek medical attention.
  • Calamine lotion can be applied on the bitten areas.
  • Never scratch, as this worsens the situation and cause an infection.
  • Dispose or wash all your bedding materials like pillows, mattresses.
  • Never try to apply an insecticide yourself because if not done properly, can cause harm.
  • An exterminator can called to deal with the insecticides to kill the bugs.

Facts about Bugs:

  • They are blood sucking small insects that feed on all warm blooded animals and humans.
  • They hide in the mattresses and can live in furnitures, wall papers or coverings.
  • They nest anywhere inside the home as long as there is food(blood).
  • They creep during the nights and are nocturnal in origin.
  • Bed bug bites result in swollen red, itchy rashes on the skin.
  • They do not carry any pathogenic organisms which causes diseases in man.
  • The saliva contains an anesthetic which numbs the pain, when it is biting.

Watch for allergic reaction symptoms:

  • Severe rash all over the bitten areas.
  • Severe pain.
  • Itching which is very severe.
  • Signs of infection like swelling, redness.
  • Nausea or vomiting.
  • Dizziness or fainting.
  • Wheezing.
  • Difficulty in breathing.
  • If the above symptoms are seen, notify a doctor immediately.
