First aid for Mosquito Bite

Immediate Care:

  • The bitten site should be washed with soap and water.
  • The area should be kept clean.
  • Try not to scratch the area.
  • A mosquito bite causes itching for few days.
  • Scratching continuously can increase the discomfort.
  • Baking soda and water can be made to a thick paste.
  • This paste can be applied on the mosquito bite area.
  • Soap can be rubbed directly on the site.
  • Icepack can also be applied directly.
  • Ice can be taken in a cloth and cold compress can be given.
  • Topical application of calamine lotion helps to relieve itching and pain.
  • Hydro cortisone cream can also be used to reduce itching.
  • To reduce swelling and redness, use ibuprofen after consulting a doctor.
  • Aloevera gel can be used to decrease itching and swelling.
  • It forms a layer that protects from infections.

Ten Tips to reduce the risk of Mosquito Bite:

  • When outdoors, use N,N-Di-ethyl-meta-toulamide as a repellent.
  • Clothes that are loose should be worn to prevent mosquitoes.
  • Wear long pants, long sleeved clothes and socks.
  • The clothes can be treated with permethrin repellents.
  • Never use perfumed hair sprays, soaps, creams and lotions.
  • Avoid walking in areas where there is stagnant water and mosquito breeding.
  • The risk of getting exposed to mosquitoes can be reduced by staying at home at mosquito feeding hours(from evening till morning).
  • When staying at a particular area, pyrethrin can be sprayed into the air.
  • Construction of bat houses and hanging insect zappers are not an effective method.

Home made Mosquito Repellents:

  • Take rosemary leaves and boil it to make a herbal tea which can be sprayed on clothes and skin.
  • Crush garlic and apply it on the skin as it effectively repels mosquito.
  • Add 1tablespoon of glycerin for every2 cups of soap.
  • Take this mixture and spray it down your entire yard.
