First aid and Preparation for Heat Wave

A heat wave is an exceptionally high temperature. If the temperature is extremely hot it can lead to many risks. Drink plenty of water and keep yourself hydrated. Stay in cool areas. Always wear hats when traveling. Wear light-colored clothing and above all protection against sun and its harmful rays.

During a Heat Wave:

The first thing is to stay cool and keep your body temperature down by :

  • Stay in dry and cool locations.
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Physical exertion should be reduced.
  • Avoid drinking alcohol.
  • Wear a hat and sunscreen when going out.
  • Try going out in the early morning.
  • Wear light-colored and cotton clothing.
  • Do not eat hot and heavy foods.
  • Be extra careful with pets because they need extra water and shade.
  • Never leave children or pets in a vehicle.
  • The electricity use can be reduced so that you can use air conditioner.
  • Avoid exposure to sun as it may cause sunburns.
  • Do not take salt tablets unless specified by a doctor.
  • Spend most of the time indoors in an air conditioned room.

Important tip:

Cut cardboard into pieces the size of a window. Wrap it in aluminum foil and place it against all the windows. This will help in reflecting the heat back outside the house.

Preparation Before a Heat Wave

  • Attic insulation will keep the house cool.
  • The gaps and cracks around windows should be sealed.
  • Air conditioner should be checked and the filters should be replaced regularly.
  • Plant trees as they remain for a long time and will help years from now.
  • Keep in contact with your neighbors to prepare for heat waves.
  • Contact each other every day during heat waves to find out that everyone is OK.
  • Install awnings outside each window for shade.

Heat Waves can cause the following :

  • Heat Stroke.
  • Heat Cramps.
  • Heat Exhaustion.
